This week’s reflection from “Rivers of Living Water” draws us into John 7:25–52 with Patrick Mbugua where Jesus is teaching in the temple amid tension, questions, and divided opinions. The passage is full of movement as people come and go, argue, and respond. Beneath the physical movement is a deeper spiritual reality. Every encounter with Jesus demands a response and that response reveals what is within us.
Movement That Reveals the Heart
The sermon shows that encountering Jesus is never passive. People either move toward Him, away from Him, or stop short of true surrender. In every case, Jesus exposes and shapes what is already happening inside the heart.
Different Responses to Jesus
The crowd
The crowd is curious but confused. They talk about Jesus but do not truly know Him. Their understanding is built on speculation rather than revelation. This shows how easy it is to be surrounded by spiritual talk and still miss real encounter.
The religious leaders
The Pharisees and chief priests resist Jesus because of pride and a desire to maintain control. Accepting Him would require surrender of influence, so they move further away from God while thinking they are defending truth.
The temple guards
The guards recognize Jesus’ authority and are deeply impacted by His words. Yet they stop at admiration. They are moved but not transformed, showing that exposure to truth is not the same as surrender to truth.
Nicodemus
Nicodemus begins as a secret believer but gradually moves toward courage. He speaks up in defense of justice. His life shows that true faith grows from hidden belief into visible courage.
The Promise of Living Water
Jesus promises that those who believe in Him will have rivers of living water flowing from within. This points to the Holy Spirit who brings life and overflow. A life filled with the Spirit cannot remain hidden or stagnant. It becomes visible through transformation and impact.

Closing Reflection
Are we moving toward Jesus or just around Him. Is our faith based on encounter or assumption. Is the Holy Spirit flowing freely in our lives or have we become dry places.
The promise of Jesus is clear. When we truly encounter Him, our lives begin to overflow. What was once dry becomes living water that brings life to others.
May we move from passive observation to active surrender and from dryness to overflow in Christ.
